4 The LORD works out everything to its proper end— even the wicked for a day of disaster.
Proverbs 16:4
I put up a poll the other day.
The statement was:
“I feel like I know what my purpose is.”
And the two options were either agree or disagree.
58% of people agreed.
They felt like they knew what their purpose was.
Whereas, 42% of people disagreed.
And I heard something good the other day:
The people around you will struggle to get excited about your vision…
When they don’t know their own.
Sometimes we look at things from a real twisted angle.
We think people are jealous. We think people aren’t supportive.
But maybe while you’re expecting them to be pushing your dream, they are simply trying to find their purpose.
So…
Finding your purpose.
I’ve seen it described with a 4 step plan.
- Turn to the Bible.
- Pray for Direction.
- Follow the Will of God
- Recognise the Promises of God.
On the first point.
The Bible has every answer you need. You can pray to God through scripture and receive answer through scripture.
Moving on.
Praying for Direction.
This one is key. Especially when paired with what was spoken about on the previous two episodes of Me, Myself and Christ, and the importance of No. Remember, with all the doors God is opening, we need to realise that not every door presented to us is our door.
Some doors will be put in front of you that appear to be blessings. But in reality, they are trapdoors.
So you need to ask God:
Is this one for me? Is this the direction you want me to move in?
Too many of us, myself included, have gotten comfortable in simply winning.
But with maturity comes clarity, and clarity brings focus.
And as we mature, I’d like to hope we can focus not only on winning, but on winning, God’s way.
We shouldn’t be content in just moving. We should be focussed on moving in the direction God wants us to move.
And we do that, through point 3.
Following the will of God.
What is the will of God for your life?
If you don’t know, I’ll give you a very simple answer.
The will of God for your life, is to do what pleases Him.
Quick question:
Define yourself in one word or phrase?
Some will say they are a healer.
A teacher.
A fisherman.
An encourager.
A listener.
A helper.
We often complicate these things. We complicate what God’s will is for our life.
But we can start at the most basic of levels.
The will of God for your life is to please Him.
Now you just need to figure out how.
And finally, we’ve got the promises of God.
What has God promised you?
Because that plays directly into how you move. How you live. The things you can handle. What direction you can go.
A lot of us struggle to know what God wants for us, because we don’t know what He’s even said to us.
We don’t know the way He moves. We don’t know His pattern. Yes God can do whatever He wants. But the Bible presents a standard. A trend of sorts. A way God tends to do things, and how He would expect us to conduct ourselves.
But if we do not know this, how will we ever learn to live a purpose driven life?
Going back to the poll.
42% didn’t feel as if they knew God’s purpose for their life.
And…
I don’t know how I feel about it.
A part of me feels like that makes sense. A part of me feels like we are likely overcomplicating it a bit. A part of me feels like people know much more than they think.
But this is what I pray for you all:
That you…
Know your purpose.
Accept your purpose.
Walk in purpose.
And Fulfil your purpose.
All of these may sound similar, but they are all distinct and key.
See if I’m being completely honest, I think a lot of people are mixing up their call and their purpose.
Being asked:
What have you been called to do?
Should illicit a different response from:
What is your purpose?
Purpose should be why you are here.
Calling is what do you do while you are here.
Dr. Dharius Daniels said this:
Purpose isn’t about God using your skills, purpose is about God using your story.
And that is so key.
We need to reduce all the extra noise.
People say things like:
“But I’m not really good at anything.”
“I don’t dance or sing.”
“I can’t play XYZ.”
And I won’t lie. That was me.
For the longest I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t see a talent that could be used in the church. I joined the media team, just because I didn’t know what to do and felt like I didn’t have any skills to use.
But over time, my view changed.
God didn’t need my skills. He needed my story.
It’s my story that drives the podcast and this blog.
It’s the story that helps me communicate with people. It’s the story that helps me worship.
It plays a part in everything.
So I want to encourage you….don’t forget your story.
Don’t forget what you’ve been through. The ups and the downs.
Even with all these talented people you see, the talents are just a part of their story.
I don’t want this to get too long so I’ll end it here.
This will either be continued on episode 10 of the podcast. Not 9. 10.
….Or as another post here on astudentoftheword.com
God Bless!
