THE WORD: Mark 9:35
For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.
LET’S PRAY
Lord, I ask for Your grace to transform my heart. Help me to embrace humility, to serve others with love, to sacrifice willingly, and to see the greatness in every person. Guide me on this journey, and give me the strength to persevere.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Let’s think back to when Jesus asked His disciples, “What were you discussing out on the road?” What was their response? They didn’t have one. They had been arguing among themselves about who was the greatest, and so they remained silent (Mark 9:33-35 NLT). Can you imagine that? Even after living with Jesus day and night for three years, His disciples found it challenging to understand humility. We don’t often want to pray into the area of humility, it’s an area where many of us believe we aren’t that bad in, but this should be a reminder that none of us are immune from this demonstrating a lack of humility. Jesus then taught them a lesson they would never forget, a lesson that is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Bible.
John’s Gospel records that at dinner one day He began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel He had around Him” (John 13:3-5 NLT). Then Jesus shocked them further by saying, “And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you” (John 13:14-15 NLT).
In the world, leaders often view themselves as being there to be served, except for short periods when it looks good to serve others. However, this is not the case for followers of Christ. For them, humility is not just a religious principle, it is a way of life.
We are meant to live like Jesus. We are meant to practice humility today and every day. We are meant to be willing to sacrifice daily! We are meant to see others as greater than ourselves! But it’s not always easy! So let’s pray!
