LET’S PRAY
Heavenly Father, grant me the strength and wisdom to recognise and prevent burnout. Teach me what it means to have balance. Help me find the middle-ground between fulfilling my responsibilities while prioritising my well-being and time with You. Lord, give me the courage to reduce my commitments without guilt, and help me deepen our relationship with You. Guide me to follow Your example by taking solitary time for prayer and rejuvenation. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Let’s talk about burnout! Hopefully you’ve never experienced it, but it’s more than likely that you have. Burnout is about more than just crashing. It’s about more than being tired and lacking the motivation to do what needs to be done. It’s a serious concern that shouldn’t be taken lightly. One moment you’re helping others—this might be your parents, your church, your friends—and handling your own responsibilities like school or work. Then, suddenly, you hit a wall. You’ve got nothing left to give. You feel like you’ve lost all willpower. And everything else, everything you are working on, falls. Have you ever worked so hard that you’ve had to give up on all that you’ve worked on, because it’s taken too much from you?
Consider this: How much rest are you actually getting? Beyond your work and acts of service, how much time do you spend in communion with God? Not spending time with God so that you can serve or so that you can be equipped to do another thing. I’m talking about spending time with God, just so that you can be with God. If the answer is “not enough,” it might be time to evaluate whether your good deeds are taking a toll on you.
Maybe it is time to ask yourself whether you are spending more time in the public place, serving, than in the secret place, in intimate communion with God. Here’s something that some of us need to hear: Reducing some of your commitments to prioritise your own well-being is not going to get God angry at you. It’s not going to make God abandon you. It’s not going to make God call you lazy and inconsiderate.
Let’s read Matthew 14:23. “And having dismissed the crowds, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. And evening having arrived, He was there alone”. Let’s really take this in. Even Jesus needed solitary time to pray and recharge. You do too. By taking time to rest and care for ourselves, and by spending time with God, we can restore our energy and ensure we remain healthy. But it’s not always easy to let go. We need help. We need God.
