THE WORD: Proverbs 4:20-22
Listen carefully, my dear child, to everything that I teach you, and pay attention to all that I have to say. Fill your thoughts with my words until they penetrate deep into your spirit. Then, as you unwrap my words, they will impart true life and radiant health into the very core of your being.
LET’S PRAY
Heavenly Father, help me to listen carefully to Your words and pay attention to everything You have to say, that I may not miss a single instruction or encouragement. As I hear Your words, help me to fill my thoughts with them and may Your words transform my mind, heart, and actions.
As I seek to obey Your words, help me to walk in wisdom and build systems to steward what You say. May I develop habits and routines that allow me to put Your words into practice in every area of my life!
Help me to truly realise that I need to prioritise meditating on Your words and putting them into practice. May I make time to sit at Your feet, listening to Your voice and learning from Your wisdom.
In Jesus’ name. Amen
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Solomon is repeating what his father David said – to not just listen, but listen carefully. To pay attention to everything God says. To fill all your thinking with God’s words through the practice of meditation. Meditation in Hebrew provides us with an image, almost like a lion intensely focused on its prey. It’s the art of zoning in on what God is saying, allowing it to repeat, murmur, and go over and over in your mind until you know it by heart.
But why do we need to meditate on God’s word? God’s word has the divine ability to penetrate deep into spirit when you meditate on them diligently. This is especially important considering that there are other thoughts fighting for your attention. Constantly fighting. Constantly demanding your attention. Will you give in? Or will you fix your gaze on the word? It may take 2 minutes for some, for others 10 minutes, but we must all take the time to meditate on His word until His word penetrates our spirit.
However, hearing God’s word alone is not enough. We can hear good teaching, feel good for a few hours, but by the next day slip back into routine because we didn’t obey and build systems to steward what God said. Don’t use God’s word as an excuse to avoid responsibility. If something fails in your life, don’t simply ask “Did God really say?” when the real issue is “Did I really obey?”
God can say 10,000 things, but if we do not obey, we won’t see the fruit. Meditate on God’s words and put them into practice. His words are meant to unlock your life. Let’s not be casual, forgetful or irresponsible with what God is speaking. Ask the Lord to help you build an environment, a system, to help you steward it diligently today!
