THE WORD: Deuteronomy 12:2-3
When you drive out the nations that live there, you must destroy all the places where they worship their gods—high on the mountains, up on the hills, and under every green tree. Break down their altars and smash their sacred pillars. Burn their Asherah poles and cut down their carved idols.
LET’S PRAY
Heavenly Father, expose any altars in my life that are hindering my worship to You. Break down the sacred pillars and strongholds that may be controlling my life, and grant me the courage and heart to cut down the idols that I have placed before You. Guide me in recognising and repenting from ungodly patterns and structures in my life, and help me to recognise that in you I hold the power to break free from the bondage of generational curses. Help me to evaluate my priorities and align them with Your will.
In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Remember how God delivered the Israelites from Egypt? That deliverance wasn’t just a one-time event, but an ongoing process. God gave them instructions to continue to keep themselves delivered, not just physically, but spiritually. In Deuteronomy 12, God is very specific about altars, idols, and sacred pillars. He wants them to destroy the altars in their lives that are hindering their worship, break down the strongholds and patterns that are controlling them, and cut down the idols that they have placed before Him.
We must recognise that it is very much possible that in our lives we may be showing the fruit of worshiping idols – things we put before God. Our time, our money, and our relationships can all be altars to other gods. It’s time to take a hard look at our lives and ask ourselves, ‘Are we truly worshiping God, or have we built altars to other gods?’ If we don’t destroy these altars, we will, like the Israelites, continue to make covenants with the pagans, play harlot with their gods, and defile ourselves and our families.
Look at your time. Who really is your God? Look at how you spend your money. Who’s really your God? We need the Lord to help us to guide us in recognising and repenting from ungodly patterns and structures in our lives.
