THE WORD: Matthew 27:42-43
He saved others, but he can’t save himself! He’s the King of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God’.
LET’S PRAY
Heavenly Father, I ask that you guard my mind and shield it from the lies of the enemy. May I not be deceived and convinced to test you. Help me to see the enemy’s tactics for what they are – attempts to trap me using my own identity.
Protect me from the enemy’s attempts to use those around me to pressure me into sin or compromise my faith. Give me wisdom to recognise the enemy’s schemes and to stand firm in my faith.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
How many times was Jesus tempted? Most of us would say three times, the three in the wilderness. But that isn’t actually too accurate. Remember when the people, rulers, and soldiers mocked Jesus, saying “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One”? Or when one of the criminals hurled insults at him, saying “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”? This isn’t too different from what the accuser tried in Matthew 4, when the devil said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order his angels to protect you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’”
What is the enemy constantly attacking? His identity. If you are who you say you are, then do this. It’s the same as if the enemy came to us and said “If you are set free from this thing, like you say you are, then you should be able to do this and be fine.”
The enemy will try to trap us using our own identity. First, let’s pray over our minds. Secondly, let’s pray into community that the Lord will surround us with Godly community. Thirdly, that we may employ the spirit of discernment. Let’s resist the enemy’s tactics and stay true to our identity in Christ. Will you pray with me today?
