THE WORD: Luke 10:41-42
And Jesus answered and said to her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.’
LET’S PRAY
Heavenly Father, I pray that You will help me prioritise being in Your presence, sitting at Your feet, and abiding in Your Word, even in the midst of busyness and distractions. Give me the strength to continually choose the one thing, trusting that it is the key to bearing lasting fruit . Help me avoid a works mindset and instead receive from You, trusting that You have already prepared a feast for me.
Teach me to discern when to prioritise rest and faith in You, even when it seems risky or illogical, and remind me that Your way often defies human logic. Remind me that You are available to everyone, and that trusting in You will be rewarded in the end.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Are you like Martha, distracted with much serving, or are you like Mary, choosing to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to His words? In Luke 10:38-42, Jesus visited the home of the two sisters, and whilst Martha was busy serving, Mary chose to prioritise being in God’s presence. Jesus replied, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41-42).
The “one thing” Mary chose was to prioritise being in God’s presence and hearing His truth amidst the busyness and distractions. Like her, you must choose this “good part” – abiding in Christ and His Word – for it is the key to bearing lasting fruit (John 15:5). As you navigate life’s responsibilities and busyness, remember Mary’s example and choose the good part that will never be taken away – a deep, abiding relationship with Jesus Christ.
Sometimes when we are struggling, the easiest thing is to look at others, like Martha, and think, “Why does God seem to be attending to them? What about me?” But the reality is, God is available to everyone. Mary simply made the wiser choice. She discerned that this was not a time for housework busyness – Jesus was there to teach. So she chose to sit surrendered at the Master’s feet, whilst Martha was anxiously serving. This troubled Martha, making her question if Jesus even cared that she was doing all the work whilst Mary sat idly.
But you know better than that! The Lord cares for all of us, desires for us to be with Him, and is always waiting for us to sit with Him. Will you choose to sit with Him today?
