Do you believe God, or do you simply believe in Him?
Is there a difference?
Well let’s walk through what it typically means to believe in God.
- You believe that He exists and that He is the one and true God. Great.
- You probably also believe that He is all powerful and because of that you fear Him. Awesome.
- Bonus points for believing Jesus died on the cross for you!
Now check James 2:19
“You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that–and shudder.”
Hmm, okay, so what is the difference between believing in God and believing God?
Cool. Cool. Let’s start with this.
Would you say it’s possible to believe in God without believing who He is?
Your immediate reaction may be no, but if you look around, there’s a surge of Christians, or as we love to say, believers, who believe in the existence of God without necessarily believing who He is.
So what does the Bible say about God and who He is ?
PSALM 116:5
Gracious is the LORD, and righteous;
Yes, our God is compassionate.
PROVERBS 15:3
The eyes of the LORD are in every place,
Watching the evil and the good.
LUKE 1:37
For nothing will be impossible with God.”
Numbers 23:19
19 God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfil?
Okay, but what does that have to do with believing in God and believing God?
I feel like we need to ask ourselves as Christians, if we believed God, would we still fear?
If we believed God, would we ever doubt or question Him?
Believe not believe in.
We can all believe in God but implore you to believe Him. Believe who He says he is. Believe what He says He would do. Believe what He is capable of.
If we believed God, would we ever feel unloved, for God is love.
If we believed God, would we ever truly feel alone for PROVERBS 15:3 says
The eyes of the LORD are in every place,
Watching the evil and the good.
Now we claim to be believers.
But the question is, are we believing or are we simply believing in?
I know I keep repeating the question, but I think this is so key.
The issue a lot of us have is that we believe in God, but we don’t believe Him and what the word tells us about Him. We believe in his existence but not in His nature.
I see it like this. We all believe in the fact that we have money in our accounts (Amen) .
Now let’s imagine you check your online banking app, and it suddenly says you’ve got £100K in it.
Many of us wouldn’t spend the amount we expected to see let alone the £100k it’s telling us we have. The fact that we believe we have money doesn’t guarantee we believe the amount or nature of the money, and this stops us from accessing it by choice. We won’t spend what we don’t believe we have even if it is in writing.
Maybe we believe in Gods existence but question his overwhelming nature, that’s beyond what we expect.
And I’m sorry to say this but many of us believe in the existence of God but not in His characteristics so we never call on Him.
So once again I’ve got to ask, do you believe God, or do you simply believe in Him?
