Jacob did all this lying and deceiving; it must’ve been for something really good. An inheritance, right?

This inheritance was more than just a pat on the back. It was more than just a warm hug. This gave him authority, security, power and prosperity.

What did the blessing involve?

Back to Genesis 27.

May God give you heaven’s dew
    and earth’s richness –
an abundance of grain and new wine.
29 May nations serve you
and peoples bow down to you.
Be lord over your brothers,
and may the sons of your mother bow down to you.
May those who curse you be cursed
and those who bless you be blessed.’

Yes, Jacob would be blessed with earth’s riches, an abundance of grain, new wine but this blessing meant that not only was God going to take care of Jacob, in the present, but also in the future. God was going to go ahead of Jacob and take care of all the little things that he’d miss, so that each and everything would be ready for him before he got there.

I guess you can say that when God provides a blessing, He also makes sure that the circumstance and environment you’re in is set for you to receive that blessing. And this was the case here, but there were other issues…

Other issues? Like what?

Jacob’s environment may have been ready for the blessing, but his character was not. We’ve seen it already. Jacob is a trickster. He desires a good thing, but he wasn’t the kind of person who could handle or even appreciate the good thing when he got it.

Oh, I get it. We desire God’s blessings. We want all that God will provide even though we’re not ready to handle all that God has in store for us.

Yeah. This may be someone you know. This may even be you. This may even be me!

Maybe those wrong thought patterns have created such a stronghold in our minds that it is affecting not only our decisions, but also our own self-perception.

Maybe you’ve been chilling with the wrong group and now their dysfunctions have become yours.

Maybe you’ve come to university thinking you’ve left the troubles of home, at home, but really the scars have followed you here.

You want what God has in store for you, but your situations and the people around you have made it so hard for you to respond when He speaks. You question. You doubt. You complain. You fuss.

“Sometimes I fear the good things because I’m scared it’ll go as quickly as it came.”

If any of that describes you, don’t think that God expects you to fix your character before you come to Him.

Oh, so my character doesn’t matter when it comes to the blessing. So, what was all that about?

No. I want you to know that if you stay on this path that God has for you, He will help you with that character issue. He’ll develop your character, just as He sought to develop Jacob’s.

You want some more good news.

You already have a blessing. You have the right to it. See you yeah. You’re not like Jacob. You don’t have to try trick your way into a blessing, but rather the blessing has already been secured for you.

Ephesians 1:3 says:

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

Even more good news!

We have every blessing we could ever need.

As a believer in Jesus Christ, you have already inherited your blessing.
